Good morning.
This week is Senior Week, so get excited! Tonight is the Mohegan Sun trip, Graditude tomorrow (for those of you who made your Senior Gift), and the Boston Harbor Cruise on Wednesday. I hope all you seniors are taking advantage of the beautiful weather. See you all Friday at Commencement!
I've been hearing a lot recently about a petition circulating campus in regards to the current economic situation and janitorial layoffs. I just wanted to clear up a few misconceptions.
Our contractor, Consolidated Services Corporation, employs more than 150 janitors at Northeastern. Approximately 30 of these positions are "academic year appointments," which begin in September and conclude in May. This is due to the decrease in demand for janitorial services during the summer, as many buildings are closed. Janitors who accept academic year appointments are aware of the September-to-May timeframe when they are hired. Of the 30 janitors with academic year appointments, currently only 7 have not yet found summer work. These workers will be notified by June 28 if summer work is available at Northeastern or elsewhere. Regardless of their summer work opportunities, these individuals are welcome to return to Northeastern in September.
I just wanted to clear up the particulars because I know there was some confusion surrounding the petition.
