Do You Have the Coolest Co-Op?

 

Did you have a glimpse into the fast-paced life of the financial world? Have you gotten an inside glimpse of the music industry? What about completing work for a non-profit, making a difference in the world? If any of these things, or anything else unique and exciting applies to you, then get in gear and apply for the COOLEST CO-OP Contest! Make a 2-minute video about the on-the-job experiential learning you’ve gained, and submit it by Monday, January 9, 2012. Oh, did we forget to mention? First place winner gets $1,000! Second and third place get $500 and $250, respectively. For a student budget, these two minutes could mean the difference between Ramen Noodle dinners and food actually intended for human digestion. “What are you doing after college?” Yes, that question is annoying when proposed several thousand times, but it’s also important. Career Services has some great resources, including the Employer in Residence Series (as you probably already know since you diligently follow this blog...right?). This week, we have City Year and Shawmut Design & Construction. A City Year representative will be in Curry Student Center this Tuesday, December 6, from 11- 1pm. She will be located at a table outside the bookstore. Or, feel free to come to Career Services and speak with her for both scheduled appointments and on a walk-in basis from 2-4pm. Shawmut's CMST Manager is available to meet with any Northeastern student during Career Services' Walk-In Hours from 2-4pm in 101 Stearns. This is the last day they will be here this semester, so don’t miss an opportunity to come by and network!

Looking for a new, unique experience? The Hindu Vedic Vision Society is holding a “Musical Meditations and Spiritual Discussions” session. There will be musical meditation on ancient Vedic chants relaxing for the heart, and discussions based on Bhagavad Gita, the most authoritative text on yoga, meditation, mind control and personality development. Afterwards, they will provide a light vegetarian dinner. Come to the Sacred Space on the 2nd floor of Ell Hall on Tuesday at 8:15pm to experience this eye-opening style of meditation. Opportunities To Show Off Your Leadership

It sounds like a clichéd Disney movie plotline, but there is truly a leader in all of us. Before you roll your eyes, just think about it! Think of all those times where you’ve had a great idea but too small a voice to express it with, or all the new situations you’ve come into and felt too shy to enjoy yourself. It happens to everyone, but LEAD 360 is determined to bring out the leader in YOU. “Locating Your Leadership Value” is a dynamic workshop being held on Monday, December 5 at 7:00pm in 346 Curry Student Center. The presentation will be given by Northeastern Leadership Consultants Chris LaColla and Britton Green. If you’re tired of fading into the background, disengaging instead of getting involved, then you don’t want to miss this special presentation. If finals have got you stressed, you might want to stop by the Sacred Space on the
second floor of Ell Hall for some nice relaxing meditation. We’re talking serious, profound calmness here, people. On Monday the 5^th from 1:15pm to 1:45pm, a guided Buddhist meditation will be held for beginners, walk-ins, experienced practitioners and everyone in between. No registration is required, but PLEASE arrive a few minutes early as not to disturb the session.

 

 

So, as the semester winds down (or winds up depending on your finals schedule), you’re going to want to start thinking about Teacher Evaluations. If you’ve had a great semester, let Northeastern know who is responsible! If you’ve had a less than appealing semester, speak up! It’s your obligation as a student to do your part in bettering your own education, so don’t forget to look at all the emails you’re being sent about evaluations. The period to evaluate is NOW until December 18 at 11:00pm.

 

A Weekend For Singing; DownBeats and Broadway 2K!

Do you sing in the shower? Do you whistle while you work? Have you ever attempted a jumping heel-click? Chances are you’re two thirds guilty of the above at the very least. But don’t be ashamed! Northeastern is teeming with people who love to sing! On Saturday, December 3rd, rock out to DownTWEETS as the DownBeats perform their awesome repertoire of songs. A mysterious guest group will also be joining the show, and everyone loves a little mystery, right? The event is FREE and will be held at 4:30pm the Matthews Arena Varsity Club (we know, we know, you’re thinking “The WHAT?” but don’t worry – there will be signs galore).  Come check it out! 

But maybe you want to kick it up a notch? Maybe you feel like dancing WHILE singign? Well, Northeastern has just the event for you!  NU Stage Musical Theater Company has put together a show that you’re going to LOVE. The show is ‘Broadway 2K’ and is a musical revue of the last decade of Broadway hits. This includes hilarious and intense numbers from shows like Wicked, Hairspray, The Book of Mormon, and Legally Blond. All the singers, dancers, band geeks, and backstage crew are students that have been working all semester to put on this live spectacle. AND IT’S FLIPPIN’ FREE! How neat is that? The show itself is on Sunday, December 4th at 8:00pm in Blackman Auditorium. You can get your tickets in advance through the myTickets portion of your myNEU.

 

 

Women’s Club Hockey Ranked #4 in the COUNTRY!

It’s high time we recognize the efforts and amazing achievements of our Women’s Club Hockey team! Ranked #4 in the ENTIRE NATION, their tough play and exciting games dominate the standings. Their amazing season continues this weekend as they play the #1 and #2 ranked teams. Come and show your HUSKY PRIDE, and get a little riled up in the process. The weekend schedule is as follows:

International students – as graduation approaches, do you know your plans? Do you plan to stay in the United States? If so, come to the Introduction to the H1-B Visa Process on Friday, December 2 from 12-1pm in 12 Stearns.  They’ll teach you what do you need to know about H-1B visas, the most common type of visas for Northeastern graduates working in the US. December = exams = stress = gloominess. NO THANKS TO THAT! Come break up the monotony with  "Funny Fridays" Laughter Meditation on Friday from 12-12:30pm in The Sacred Space on the 2nd floor of Ell Hall. Not your typical meditation, this session lasts a half-hour, and is open to all on a walk-in basis. Relieve stress, breathe, laugh a little, and remind yourself that it’s almost time for a LONG winter break! Not in classes? Come by anyway! You can’t go wrong – honestly, who doesn’t enjoy laughter?

 

Northeastern Symphony Orchestra has been working tirelessly all semester to bring you
their Fall Concert! At 8pm at the Fenway Center on 77 St. Stephen’s Street, come by for what promises to be a great performance. 

 

Airspace Sculptor Janet Echelman Talks With Aoun!

 

Remember that time President Aoun was doing that event with guy who invented the Roomba?  Remember how it was publicized with the above video of our President rumbaing with the Roomba? Well, we don’t know if there’s going to be anymore dancing, but we DO know that President Aoun will be hosting a conversation with artist Janet Echelman on Thursday, December 1^st at 5:00pm in the Raytheon Amphitheater. A reception will follow the event.

“Taking Imagination Seriously” is the next in the Profiles of Innovation/Presidential Speaker Series. It features airspace sculptor Janet Echelman, an artist who transforms urban space by creating building-scale sculpture environments that continuously change and morph. There are simply no more jokes or puns that can be dreamed up when it comes to the
holidays. We’ve heard and said it all! So, what’s a culture on the brink of the holiday season to do? Start singing! Northeastern a capella group Distilled Harmony is hosting a Holly Jolly Holiday Show this Friday, December 2 at 8:00pm in afterHOURS! The show will feature the Harvard Callbacks and the Brandeis Starving Artists. So, don your tinsel or deck your halls or whatever, and come check out these tunes! We all remember our Northeastern Orientation, right? The nerves, the early mornings, the infinite presentation on how to fill out a student employment form, and best of all those Orientation Leaders, all smiles and games and interminable pep! Well, if you think you’ve got what it takes to be an Orientation Leader, than you should think about applying! It’s one of Northeastern’s coolest jobs, you get to spend the summer in Boston playing games, and it’s paid! Free Food – The Good Kind, Not Just Pizza

The Xhibition Kitchen is at it again – straight from the mean streets of Cambridge, chef and author Maria Speck will be on campus for a Free Cooking Demo and Cookbook Signing!  Her book, "Ancient Grains for Modern Meals", is hugely popular. In addition to her culinary feats, she boasts writing experience: she has contributed to Gourmet, Saveur, and Gastronomica, as well as Marie Claire and Elle. Her popular cooking classes in Cambridge, Massachusetts, focus on the flavors and cooking styles of the Mediterranean, where she grew up, and on creating innovative and delicious meals with whole grains. Whether you’re a whole grain enthusiast (if there is such a thing?) or just looking for a great meal, come by Xhibition Kitchen from 12-1pm Wednesday, November 30, and you will not be disappointed!

 

 

 

To continue the stream of stellar guests on campus, poet Louise Glück will host “An American Poet in the 21st Century: A Reading and Discussion” in 421 Snell Library from 5-6pm. Glück is the author of numerous books of poetry including "A Village Life: Poems"; "Averno", which was a finalist for the 2006 National Book Award in Poetry; "The Seven Ages"; and "Vita Nova", winner of Boston Book Review's Bingham Poetry Prize and The New Yorker's Book Award in Poetry. Bottom line: she’s won awards, she’s awesome, and she’ll be on campus for us!

Hear from NU international student alumni what led to their success finding jobs after graduation. Hear from employers what they want to see in international student candidates for positions at their companies. Barstool Sports’ Creator at Northeastern!

Barstool Sports – at one time or another, you've probably read an article from the hilarious/controversial blog about the latest Patriots drama or commentary on absurd news stories. Dave Portnoy, or El Pres as he’s known on the site, is the creator of the wildly popular Barstool franchise, and NU Entrepreneurs Club has booked him to speak on campus! Tuesday, November 29 El Pres will grace us with his scandalous presence in 200 Richards at 6pm for a discussion about the success of his website and how he used his entrepreneurial skills to get there. Very educational, informative…okay, we’re going for the crazy stories, too, but we can all hide behind the façade of learning and career advancement. Check out more info here.

Want to get a jump start on job searching? Join the club. Or, join the Small Group Job Search from 12-1pm in 12 Sterns on Tuesday!  This small group workshop is the first step to starting your job search. In this strategy session we’ll include, but go beyond traditional job search methods, to also focus on online and in-person networking and using social media sites such as LinkedIn. The end of the semester is always accompanied by stress – finals beginning, choosing classes or a co-op for next semester, possibly moving – the list goes on. Fortunately, there are great ways to destress on campus, with events like the Tuesday Evening Guided Meditation. Stop by the Sacred Space on the 2^nd Floor of Ell Hall from 6:15-6:45pm and enjoy some tranquility. It’s close to the library, so take a study break and come on over for some peace of mind. It’ll help you in the short and long run!

Interested in doing a summer internship? Internships are a great way to enhance your resume and learn about careers related to your major. Learn about paid and unpaid internships available this summer. Come to the Internship Fair Prep from 5-6pm on Monday, November 28. You’ll get resources to search for internships in cities across the US (not just Boston)and learn what you need to do to prepare for the upcoming Internship Fair in January. Happy Turkey Day!

For those of you who went home, we hope you had a safe journey. For those of you still here, we hope you have a great day filled with either relaxation or tons of fun, whichever you’re in the mood for this year.

If you have the stamina to get your Black Friday on, meet at the corner of Forsyth and Huntington at 10am on Friday, November 25, as Northeastern will provide buses to the Wrentham Outlet Mall, a mecca for shopaholics. Some of their stores includes the Nike Factory Store, Eddie Bauer, Michael Kors, Rue 21, Puma, and a TON more. The bus will stay until 6pm, so you can get all your holiday (read: personal) shopping done.  The trip is free & space is limited, so sign up today by emailing t.schwoeffermann@neu.edu.

If you’re feeling lazy after a hard day of shopping (#firstworldproblems), come by afterHOURS at 7:30pm and catch a screening of the hit movie “Super 8”. The movie will start at 8pm.  The following night (same time, same place), there will be a screening of “The Hangover II”. Don’t miss these free events that also include FOOD.

To wrap up your weekend and get back into the Northeastern swing of things, head to Cabot Gymnasium and watch the Women’s Basketball DOUBLEHEADER as they take on Georgia at 1pm and Georgetown at 3:30pm.  The women are looking to pick up their first win after a series of hard-fought games, so show your Husky support and work off that Thanksgiving meal jumping up and down in the stands!

Quiet Wednesday

Sticking around for the holidays? Wednesday will be a pretty quiet day, so here are some fun things to do around Beantown while everyone is traveling home:

Snell Library is open 7:45am-5pm Wednesday, November 23. Grab a new or unique book, cozy under a blanket (or Snuggie if you are so inclined), and enjoy the relative quiet of the city.

Tap into your inner scream queen/king and check out a screening of “North by Northwest” as part of the Alfred Hitchcock Film Festival.  The screening starts at 3pm at the West End Branch of the Boston Public Library on 151 Cambridge Street.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, the Milky Way Lounge in Jamaica Plain (284 Amory Street) is hosting Rock & Roll Bingo Night! Listen to some sweet tunes and win cool prizes. Starts at 9pm.
