Student Affairs Scholarships, Funny Fridays, and Cradles to Crayons Gift Drop Box

College is expensive, right? You can’t stop whining that you’re a poor college student, right? Well, what many college students don’t know is that a world of scholarships exist if one is willing to take the time and search for them! For example, the Student Affairs Scholarships are NOW LIVE through THIS LINK. There are 9 scholarships on the page, 7 of which are through Student Affairs and two (marked with an asterisk) are through Spiritual Life. The scholarship awards range from $500 to $5,000 and many different types of students are eligible. Most scholarships apply to students who display exemplary leadership, and who demonstrate financial need, have GPAs above 2.5, and are not on any form of university probation. Go ahead and check out the specific requirements for each one, and get applyin’!

As finals take their bow, and as the legions of over-stressed and sleepless students collapse into piles of surplus husky bucks (yeah right!), Spiritual Life finds its calm in meditation. Laughing meditation, to be exact. On Friday, December 15 from 12:00pm-12:30pm in the Sacred Space, “Funny Fridays” will take place. This is a walk-in basis guided session and a great way to experience the profound benefits of meditation on the mind, body and spirit! And have fun, of course. Cushion/chairs will be provided, and please arrive on time as not to disturb the others attending.

 

Got any old winter apparel hanging around that you no longer need? You’re not benefiting from it cluttering up your closet, but the donation of your lightly used clothes could make a HUGE difference in someone’s life this holiday season. A Cradles to Crayons drop box in 101 Ell will be set up until Monday, December 19 for the collection of new and lightly used children’s items, such as winter shoes, boots (infant child sizes 0-13 and youth/adult sizes 1-10), hats, gloves, scarves and mittens. Last year Cradles to Crayons received more than 11,000 orders for winter clothes. This year, they expect to receive 15,000, and your donation could make the difference!

Holiday Events Around the City

Northeastern’s campus can get a bit quiet during finals. If you need an entertaining study break or are sticking around for a bit once yours are done, there are plenty of things to do around the city to keep you entertained. There’s Frog Pond, where you can ice skate or just people watch; Downtown Crossing, which has shopping and live music; and so much more! Boston.com’s list of free things to do can keep you entertained for a while, until you have to hit the books again or you have to go home for the holidays.

 

As always, Wednesday Well-Being Guided Meditation will take place December 14 from 3-3:30pm in The Sacred Space. This guided meditation session lasts a half-hour, and is a great way to experience the profound benefits of meditation on the mind, body and spirit. Cushions/chairs provided. Please arrive on time so as not to disturb the meditation of others.

 

If you’re looking for a little more intellectual stimulation, the Open Classroom Series: The Role of Government in the 21st Century will be held from 6-8pm in West Village F, Room 20. This graduate-level policy seminar is open to the public free of charge. This unique lecture will facilitate discourse on important issues facing us today. Have one last academic hurrah before your mind abandons all critical thought for lounging with family and a thousand episodes of “The Wire”.

Mic Check, Mic Check!

The semester is ending, nerves are fraying, crunch time is in full swing – we need an outlet! Luckily, afterHOURS is stepping up to the challenge. The last Open Mic Night of the semester will take place on Tuesday, December 13 at 9pm! Sign up at 8:30 if you want to sing, dance, recite poetry, practice your public speaking final, or whatever else your heart desires. Not ready to perform? Enjoy your fellow students’ creativity while sipping a coffee from Starbucks.

In case you missed it on Monday, there are more FREE MASSAGES in Snell Library! Head to the lobby from 12-2pm for an amazing finals treat. Your work will still be waiting when you’re done…but at least your back won’t be sore!

Just in case you need another relaxation break, head to the Sacred Space on the 2nd floor of Ell Hall for Tuesday Evening Guided Meditation. As usual, from 6:15-6:45pm there will be a guided meditation session. Cushions and chairs will be provided. Please arrive on time so as not to disturb the meditation of others.

 

On co-op? Able to avoid finals? Why not devote that time to making your COOLEST CO-OP VIDEO?! Make a two-minute video about why your co-op was the best, coolest, most fulfilling co-op this year, and you  could win $1,000, $500, or $250! Submissions are due by January 9, 2012. END OF FALL 2011! NU Unplugged’s Acoustic Christmas Show, LSCC Toy Drive!

Welcome to your last academic Monday of the year 2011! Woo! For those in classes, we hope your finals are going well! For those finishing up co-op, CONGRATS! You’ve made it! You’re a real person with real life experiences!

 

NU Unplugged is here to usher in the holiday season with a set of acoustic Christmas songs and carols! On Monday, December 12 at 8:00pm, NU Unplugged is going to once again bring you some of the most talented acoustic singers and songwriters of Northeastern. The event is in afterHOURS, totally free, and definitely worth stopping by. You’ll be able to cozy up to some nice caffeinated beverage, ignore your final papers and cramming, and let yourself relax to songs like: All I Want For Christmas Is You, Mistletoe (Justin Bieber), White Christmas, Winter Song, and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, along with a few new songs thrown in!

 

Also in the holiday spirit, we wanted to let you all know about a great opportunity to celebrate the gift of giving! The Latino/a Student Cultural Center (LSCC) invites you to join their Annual Toy Drive this holiday season. Every year the LSCC sponsors a shelter and with your generations they’ve made hundreds of wishes come true. This year’s sponsored shelter is The Elizabeth Stone House of Jamaica Plain. If you’re interested in donating, all gifts can be dropped off, unwrapped, at the Latino/a Student Cultural Center (104 Forsyth Street) by December 16, 2011. Dance, Dance, Dance! NUDANCO, Nor'Easters, No Limits Dance Crew Final Shows!

This is the weekend for dancing. Dancing in private, dancing in public, dancing to loud music, dancing to the non-rhythmic clapping of your grandmother while your family tries to eat dinner. It all counts. And if you’re looking for some inspiring moves then look no further than the following events:

On Saturday, December 10, NUDANCO is holding their 9^th Annual Winter Showcase! NUDANCO has put on some incredible shows in the past, and they’re happy to bring you their best work yet. This show features a wide variety of dance styles including tap, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, jazz, and even Irish step! All pieces are student choreographed by talented NUDANCO dancers. It is sure to be a fantastic display of skill and artistry, and we can’t wait to see how NUDANCO has raised the bar! The Showcase will take place in Blackman Auditorium, with shows at 3:00pm and 7:00pm. Admission is totally free with your NU ID, and $12 for the general public. If you don’t want to secure your tickets online through your myNEU student portal, you can try to pick them up at the box office before the show. Join the Nor’easters for their final concert of the semester, ‘Christmas in July! In December’ As always, the Nor’easters are going bring you the most intense and incredible repertoire  of a capella music, and with style! For this show they’ve got new tunes, a few rad guest groups, and a whole lot of fun. It will take place on Saturday, December 10 at 7:30pm in the Fenway Center. Admission is FREE, NU+1! Make sure to RSVP to the facebook group!

 

 

If you still haven’t had enough song and dance (as if that’s even a possibility), NO LIMITS DANCE CREW is holding their Winter Recital on Sunday, December 11 also in Blackman Auditorium! NLDC is doing a two-show day, with recitals at 3:00pm and 7:00pm. Tickets are free with NU IDs and $5 for general admissions, but you’ll want to get them before they sell out so hurry! NLDC is one of those high-energy shoes that will surely get you on you up on your feet and ready to move. NLDC is Northeastern’s largest and most diverse dance group with its cast of 150 performers! In this show, you’ll see bellydancing, Bollywood, lyrical, contemporary and much more! It’s slated to be a great show, so get your tickets soon! Here’s a link to the facebook event.

De-Stress from Finals with These Free Events!

 

Wake up. Study. Exam. Library. Sleep. Repeat. If your finals week looks something like this, you’re not alone. It’s easy to feel like a robot this time of year, when all you really want to do is curl up in your bed and watch 12 episodes of How I Met Your Mother.  The Spiritual Life Center is here to help! They invite you to "Take a Human Break!" on Friday, December 9. Head to The Sacred Space/ Reflection Room on the 2nd floor Ell Hall from 9-10am for free coffee and a bagel/ muffin breakfast. It's a great way to meet other students, faculty and staff from across the University, and enjoy some free food and yummy coffee. Smile, it's Friday! :)

Once you’ve relaxed your brain a little, keep this in mind: on Monday, December 12 and Tuesday, December 13, Northeastern will provide FREE MASSAGES!!! From 12-2pm, head to the lobby of Snell Library (like you won’t be there anyway), and enjoy this amazing, relaxing, soothing gift. 

‘Tis the season…for ginger bread houses! Come by the Xhibition Kitchen on Friday, December 9 and Monday, December 12 from 11:30am-1pm and vote via Twitter or Facebook for your favorite Student Houses from The Gingerbread Construction Contest.  Cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50 will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Popular vote wins, so make yours count! Best of all, all houses are donated to Rosie's Place and Pine Street Inn - two local homeless shelters. Dining Services will match the three winner’s prizes with donations to Haley House or Toys for Tots.

Looking for that unique holiday gift? Getting a bit chilly to bring yourself to venture through the masses at the Prudential Center? Fear not! The Entrepreneur Holiday Fair features Northeastern student entrepreneurs and their products. Stop by the Curry Student Center Indoor Quad from 12-2pm, and check out what your classmates have to offer. There will be a great selection of goods and products made right here by Northeastern students – support your peers, find great holiday gifts, and avoid the cutthroat holiday shoppers in the mall. It’s a win-win-win!

Dance4Me 2011 Dance Competition, and Her Campus Northeastern Teams Up With J.Crew!

It’s reading day! We know y’all are probably rushing to the library to check out books and,
well, reading them, but we have a few suggested events to help you ease into the swing of finals. First up is the awesome event ‘Dance4Me 2011,’ presented by UTSAV, Barkada, RSA, and LASO. It’s an annual charity dance competition to see student groups and dance groups perform for a great cause! The show is December 8 at 6:30pm (doors open at 6:00pm).  Hey shopaholics, we’ve got the PERFECT event for you to rationalize your shopping addiction! Her Campus Northeastern and J. Crew have teamed up to bring you a great deal and a clean conscience. On Thursday, December 8, you can enjoy 15% off at J.Crew with the flash of your Husky Card! The event will begin at 7pm and then will become a closed shopping event at 8:00pm for attendees only, so make sure to check out the facebook event . The event will include cookies, refreshments, a chance to take some nice retail therapy, the lovely company of the Her Campus Northeastern Ladies, and a raffle giving away Her Campus gear as a thank you for coming! NU Unplugged's Live Acoustic Christmas Show on Dec. 8, 8:00pm

So…someone told me you hate the holidays. Someone told me you think they’re tacky, that the swelling faces of greed and avarice gross you out. Someone told me that secret santa gives you anxiety. But you know what I say? You just haven’t experienced the NU Unplugged Acoustic Christmas show yet!  NU Unplugged has been spotlighting talented Northeastern musicians for the past Fall semester and is happy to bring you the best acoustic holiday carols around. Seven performers will switch off to sing some well known classics and some not-so-well-known hits, including: All I Want For Christmas Is You, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Winter Song, Mistletoe (yeah, that’s right, the Justin Bieber one), and of course White Christmas.

The show will be in afterHOURS on December 12^th (that’s the Monday of finals week, for all of you entombed in tests and papers) from 8:00pm-9:00pm. AND it’s FREE! Consider it a preemptory gift from afterHOURS/NU Unplugged. Featured student performers are: Dan Harcourt, Rene Pelletier, Ben Mallare, Ryan La Sala, Katie McKenna, Lindsay Donald, and Emma Kurman-Faber.  This is a super festive show full of great talent and holiday cheer, so take a study break (aka take a break from refreshing facebook) and get inspired for Christmas! Holiday Gift Rap at afterHOURS

It’s time for the hip-hop show of the year at afterHOURS! This show, brought to you by ever-so-generous MEISA, Tastemakers, WRBB, and Greenline Records will feature Murs, Grieves & Budo, and K.Flay! These artists are on the rise, and are here for FREE On Wednesday, December 7! Show is at 7pm, doors at 6:30pm. What’s even better - the concert is also a food drive for the Greater Boston Food Bank, so please bring non-perishable items. All those who donate will be entered to win a pair of tickets to see The Kills courtesy of Bowery Boston! The show is NU only, so don’t forget your Husky Card. As we’ve mentioned before, Women’s Ice Hockey is having a great season! They will take on rivals Boston University on Wednesday, December 7 at 7pm in Matthews. Show up, yell, scream, do whatever to show your support for this powerhouse team that’s leading Northeastern to victory time and time again.

 

“Buddy the Elf, what’s your favorite color?” If you don’t know this famous line from the hilarious movie “Elf”, then get down to The Sacred Space on the 2nd floor Ell Hall at 7pm to watch a free screening! If you do know the movie, then head over anyway and enjoy the film and free candy. Happy early holidays!

 

 

Northeastern Ballroom Dancing Club is bringing yet another funky dance class to campus - Beginner International Jive Lesson! This fun and fast dance will be taught at 8:15pm in CSC Studio B. No experience required – come with an open mind and energy, and you’ll learn the basics and have a great time.
